Synopsis
Mahindra XUV500, a SUV has 9 Diesel versions available in India. It is out on roads in 7 lavish colours, namely, Dolphin Grey, Moondust Silver, Opulent Purple, Pearl White, Sunset Orange, Tuscan Red and Volcano Black. Launched in 2011, the Mahindra XUV500 received significant exterior and interior updates in 2014 and an ‘Xclusive Edition’ in 2015 was introduced. This SUV holds Mahindra’s maximum share in the Indian market.
Outer Look
The updated model, based on the company’s new W105 3rd generation platform resembles the Scorpio. It has a more vigorous and virile appearance than its predecessor. The front facade features a new honeycomb front grille, modified fog lamps, new projection headlamps, power-foldable and adjustable ORVMs. Elements like sporty alloys, roof rails, LED parking lights and paw-styled vertical door handles elevate the exterior designing and elegance.
Interior & features
The dual-tone interior of the car looks as stimulating and robust as the exterior. The enormous cabin space and equipment offered at its price are invincible. Prominent features include 8-way adjustable leather seats with lumbar support, sporty twin-pod instrument cluster and modified central bezel. Features like a 6-inches touch screen infotainment with GPS, MP3, DVD, CD, FM and USB and iPod connectivity, voice commands, fully automatic temperature control with dual HVAC, cruise & audio controls on steering wheel, reverse parking assist and tyre tronics are available only with top-end model and the Xclusive Edition.
Engine
The new model continues to be powered with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine with latest Bosch CRDI (Common rail direct injection) technology and the 5th generation S-type variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). This oil burner generates a maximum power of 140bhp at 3750rpm with 330Nm of torque between 1600rpm to 2800rpm. Power is transmitted through a 6- speed synchromesh manual gearbox.
Mileage
The 2179 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 13.1 kmpl.
Performance and Handling
The engine refinement levels are good at low revs. However, it gets ear-splitting above 3500rpm. Power delivery is linear. It gives a relished driving experience and makes overtaking effortless. The drivability is improvised to make it exceed those of other Mahindra car models.
Rivalry
The Nissan Terrano gives Mahindra XUV500 a tough battle. The Nissan Terrano is smaller and is not as equipped as the model in concern. However, it offers more comfortable and composed ride, better material quality, fit and finish. With contemporary styling, interior comfort and resilient engine performance, the Terrano makes a better choice for buyers.
